24 Hour Time For Dummies

I strongly advocate everyone learning using the 24 Hour clock verses our normal 12 hour clock.

I was in the military for 6 years and I am quite comfortable with it. My father was a pilot and he taught me the the 24 clock as well as the Phonetic Alphabet (which I also advocate), so I was familiar enough with it prior to entering into the military. It is simple enough to learn with a little diligent practice.

Problems With the 12 Hour Clock

The current problems we have with our 12 hour clock is that you always have to ask or wonder is this person meaning AM or PM, morning or afternoon, if they speak or write the time lazily or you catch the conversation out or context. Unless they specifically say AM or PM, or morning or afternoon or the contxt is quite clear, then this thought or annoying ponderance is there in the back of your mind. If I say 7 o’clock you need to know AM or PM in order to know what time a person is referring to, whereas if they say 19:00 you know it is at night.

There only a few countries left that use the 12 hour clock: the United States, Canada, and a few others.

Why Use the 24 Hour Clock

The 24 hour clock, conversely, is clear by the spoken or written numbers: 17:31 is 5:31pm or 03:35 is 3:35am. There is no potential alpha or numeric ambiguity possible with the time. It is easy to read and for your mind to parse instead of parsing both alpha and numeric characters, there are just a single set of numbers for your mind to interpret.

Much of Europe has moved to the 24 clock. Airlines, military, trains and other similar emergency and international and public services use the 24 hour clock for its simplicity, ease of use, and lack of ambiguity.

10:00 PM 22:00
11:00 PM 23:00
12:00 AM 24:00 (ending)

Learning the 24 Hour Clock is not so hard. Times from 1:00am to 12:00pm (noon) are written basically the same. It is written as follows: 2:30am = 02:30 (or 0230); 4:15pm = 16:15 (or 1615). See, it is not really that different.

After noon time things get a little trickier though. The hours after noon increase incrementally by 1 numerical hour from 1:00pm up until 12:00am (midnight), so you have 1:00pm is 13:00, 2:00pm is 14;00, and 3:00pm is 15:00… all the way up to 11:59pm which is 23:59. See! =)

Midnight Conventions

There are some conventions for telling the midnight hour. They are not really important since they all point to the same time. Use either and you will be understood.

If you are talking about the ending of a day or time period on midnight, it would be 24:00 since it would continue the day’s counting process. If you start a day at midnight they it would be 00:00 which shows a new day starting and not a continuance from the previous day’s activities or period.

That is about it. Both refer to the same time, so either way there will be no real confusion. Some use one and not the other.

Speaking 24 Hour Time

24 hour time is spoken as such: 02:00 would be said ‘oh two hundred hours’; 02:30 would be said ‘oh two hundred thirty hours’ or just ‘twenty two thirty’.

Telling 24 Hour Time On-The-Fly

For times prior to noon it is not a problem. They are written essentially the same. Times after noon require a little bit of math. The more basic way to tell time (until you get used to it) is to take the time and subtract 12:00 and that will be your time (converted to 12 the hour clock system). Leave the minutes alone since that will not change, and just do the math for the hours portion:
  • 16:00 would be 16:00 – 12:00 = 4:00pm – since the hour is greater than 12 you know that it is at pm time.
  • 22:15 would be 22:15 – 12:00 = 10:15pm – again, since the hour is greater than 12 you know that it is at pm time.
  • 02:31 would be 2:31am – no math is required since the hour is less than 12:00.
  • 10:18 would be 10:18am – again, no math is required since the hour is less than 12:00.

This method is a little more difficult (in my humble opinion), but it will suffice until your get more familiar with it and then the following potentially simpler method may serve you better:

For hours greater than 12:00 you just subtract 2:00 from the time, and since the hour is automatically going to be a twelve or less you drop the first digit. Such as the following: 21:00 – you forget about the 20:00 portion of the time and just subtract the 02:00 from the hour leaving you 9:00 pm.

For times of 22:00 or greater you will remember they are a derivitive of 10:00 so you just add the 10:00 to the 0:00 and you have your time:

  • 22:04 = 2:04 – 2:00 = 0:04 + 10:00 = 10:04pm
  • 18:16 = 8:16 – 2:00 = 6:16pm
  • 23:45 = 3:45 – 2:00 = 1:45 + 10:00 = 11:45pm
  • 15:33 = 5:33 – 2:00 = 3:33pm

If you have any questions or comments feel free to add them here. If you have any resources or methods that simplify this process I would also like to hear it.  Below are some other resources that may assist you in learning the 24 hour clock including some study tools and a flash application or two.

How to Shave Your Groin, by Gillette?

“Oh! My! God! (OMG)” is all I can say to this. I never thought I would see a video on How To Shave Your Groin (embedded video follows) from a large company like Gillette to promote something like this, especially in this way… Wow! With our sex-negative and rather prudish society in general I find this rather refreshing. =)

Personal Genome Project??

I really, really, really want to sign up for the Personal Genome Project. This makes me want to squeal with delight….. I need help. I know. =)

Baby Shower, Refinancing, and more…

Baby Shower

We had a baby shower on Sunday with great turnout. Laura was of tremendous help in organizing this with Tanya. The party was at her house in Baraboo. I would like to send a special thank you to her! =)

The attendees were mostly those of the Yoga persuasion. Many were able to make it and it was a lot of fun. There was plenty of food, especially Tanya’s favorite Russian dishes which are always a hit. There was also the painting of Tanya’s belly which had a lot of neat designs. My contribution was a red outline of a heart with a Mountain Dew/Irish green center.

The Hunt for Gollum

A Tolkien Estate sanctioned 40 minute fan film called “The Hunt for Gollum” went live Sunday. I cannot wait to find the time to watch this.

Refinancing our Home

The best option I have (and that we are pursuing) is what is called a Veteran’s Streamline of my existing Veteran backed mortgage. We are planning on paying for all of the expenses to make this happen, in the area of $2,500 so we do not loose what little equity we have accrued so far, and this will reduce our mortgage payment by a little over $100 a month. Yea! More money!

I am currently with GMAC Mortgage and through them they will charge and additional $2,000 in lenders fees on top of the other standard fees to originate this. I am going with Wells Fargo which has a branch in Baraboo here due to the low base cost of the refinance, and they also have the Equity Rewards credit card that helps to buy down your mortgage principle. All-in-all, a good deal. =)

This will be especially important due to Tanya giving birth to our first child in July. We are going to need to extra money. =)

Wanting to Teach the Kids…

So, the following week shall be fun. My sister’s kids will be here at my parents house until Thursday, I think, and they are a 15,16 and 7′ish. There will be a lot of racquetball and eating going on. The last time they came I played so hard that my back and neck were out of wack for a week. I have to play really hard to have a chance to beat that athletic punk. We will also be celebrating Easter this Sunday and my mother’s birthday on Monday. I have a lot to look forward to over this next week. =) I just hope that I have the energy to survive

Now something that does come to mind to this not-so-interesting uncle, is I really want to expose them to the different books that have really changed the way that I see the world. Books such as “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”, “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”, “Why Beautiful People Have More Daughters”, “The Jeffereson Bible”, “Introduction to Linguistics” and things of that nature, but I myself thinking that I would be overstepping my bounds as an uncle. I do not think that my sister would mind at all, but still, the hesitation is there. I know that I will have this luxury when our daughter is born.

I know their minds are young and they still lack perspective, but perhaps reading these will plant the seeds of a greater understanding and appreciation in the world for things that most would not have. I also want to introduce them to Esperanto, plus topics such as globalization and comparative religion, but that makes me not-so-interesting to spend time with. =( They are still kids and are more interested in having fun, which is what they come here for.

I remember when I was alone with Sammy at a water park and I was talking about such not-so-interesting topics and I felt sorry for her. She was a trooper and stood through it all hoping that the line would go faster so the end would come really soon. Good kids they are. =) I wish I could just open my brain and poor some of my perspective and experience into their little heads to give them that extra headstart in understanding this crazy and sometimes dangerous place we live in.

In some ways I feel sorry for our daughter for the things we will subject her too like all of the things I mentioned above plus Russian, Yoga, and Martial Arts. =)

I think I have rambled enough for now. I know I do not normally post about such personal stuff, but I felt compelled to do so today. =)

“China Takes Aim at US Dollar”

There is an article in the Wall Street Journal titled “China Takes Aim at US Dollar” which says:

China called for the creation of a new currency to eventually replace the dollar as the world’s standard, proposing a sweeping overhaul of global finance that reflects developing nations’ growing unhappiness with the U.S. role in the world economy.

The unusual proposal, made by central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan in an essay released Monday in Beijing, is part of China’s increasingly assertive approach to shaping the global response to the financial crisis.

Wall Street Journal

Now, I am very pro-globalization and I will say that the author seems to a be significantly uninformed about Esperanto, but ultimately something like this really needs to happen. It will really help to stabilize economies as well as breakdown the barriers between our nations and cultures. The Esperanto metaphor is rather appropriate, and at the same time Esperanto needs to be adopted as well for such similar reasons.

I think it is a great idea. The creation and use of the Euro shows that it can be done and it does work, but of course getting it started is reeeeeaaaallllly expensive, takes time, and will take countries giving up their pride and doing what’s best for the future of  their countries and the world. There is also those who support the idea of the Amero which would be the North American equivalent of the Euro used by Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

It will be in the US’ best interests to spearhead this as well as the adoption of Esperanto, because as you can see the cause for a change is here, not only in the reduction of use and teaching of English, but also in the worlds desire to not have their economies be dependent on the strength or weakness of the US economy. The world is slowly shifting away from American dependence and it is in our best interests to have a say in where it shifts to. Preferably not to another country’s court, but in a neutral non-national court that can help bring us closer together.

Times are a changing and so do we – Esperanto and a World Currency… Hoooo Aahhhh!!!

Gene Therapies Or Genetic Filtering Of Our Reproductive Cells Is Going To Be Necessary

This post ends up being a kind of a follow up to ‘Monogamy and Medical Sciences Bypassing Advantages of Natural Selection‘.

First let me define Genetic Therapies and Genetic Filtering in the way that I will be using it in this post:

Genetic Therapies
I am referring to a branch of medicine in which we will be able to administer to people, post birth, to genetically filter out/remove mutations, diseases, and other undesirable traits.
Genetic Filtering
Genetic filtering or screening of embryos or other reproductive cells to remove mutations, diseases, and other undesirable traits.

We have our medical sciences  extending our lives and allowing undesirable and genetically transferable diseases, mutations, and traits to continue on in our genetic pool that would normally, without the interference of technology, have been weeded out through natural selection. Because of this fact, I believe that gene therapies or  genetic filtering of our reproductive cells  is going to be necessary to strengthen and to ensure the survival of our species,  since evolution is going to be denied its ability to do its job well. We will, in some ways, have to act as evolution’s assistant since our medical sciences is running interference and allows traits that would normally die out to perpetuate.

Another really important advantage of using either gene therapies or genetic filtering is decreased health care costs, and an increase in the quality of life and our productive years.  Perhaps these are going to be the most important health care advances, because they are totally preventative based medicine and not response based medicine.

It’s a girl (but not 100%)

So, we returned from our first ultrasound appointment at 5 months yesterday, and it was quite the wonderful experience. We were able to see in shades of gray our little baby… moving its arms and legs, opening its mouth, and just generally squirming about. It was cool. It is amazing that we have the technology to do this. I am completely awed by it. Tanya said, after seeing how active it was, that she rarely felt it move, so it must have done something pretty big for her to feel it.

The wonderful technician from the Reedsburg Area Medical Center looked twice to determine (not a 100% mind you) the gender of our baby. To her and to us it seemed to be a girl.

I, of course, as most men do, was hoping for a boy, but for some inexplicable reason was expecting a girl. Most other people thought it was going to be a girl too. I will be happy just a long as she is healthy. Its gender is not guaranteed at 100% yet, but we are pretty sure’ish.

I am looking forward to raising her and teaching her my geeky and eccentric ways. Poor kid. I all ready feel sorry for her. =0 =)

We have had names picked out for either a boy or a girl for a long time now. The girl’s name was picked from the Russian tradition of first name/father’s first name/last name, so her (english’cized) name is Ooliana James O’Neill. I promise it works better in Russian – Ульяна. Her first name is, I think, Tanya’s great grandmother’s first name.

Esperanto, The EU, and the Nobel Peace Prize

European Union

Ljudmila Novak, who I assume is a Polish a Slovenian delegate to the European Union Parliament, is suggesting that Esperanto be the common language for the European Union. Yea!

Since it was mentioned below I will go ahead and add this to the post. I have seen this around, but I have not posted it yet, since I had a good idea what it was about. The Prague Manifesto, which was drafted in 1996 at a World Congress of Esperato, gives a wonderful rationale for the use of Esperanto as the IAL

Nobel Prize

I did not report on this before since there were only a few places that mentioned it, but I will mention this now: Esperanto was nominated for a 2008 Nobel Peace Prize.

Fewer Calories = Better Brains?

There is an article in the MIT‘s Technology Review, which I read often, called “Fewer Calories = Better Brains?” which lends to support as to the wondrous effects of a Calorically Restricted diet with Optimal Nutrition (CRON).

Two of Esperanto’s Exceptions and Why They Are There??

So, in thinking about Esperanto and some of those people who love Esperanto such as myself, but yet still find some issues with the language. Esperanto is a wonderful tool. It is not perfect, by any means, but is great at what is does – act as a simple to learn and use International Auxiliary Language.

There are two anomalies that exist in Esperanto that I find interest in their existence. Esperanto planned the language. It did not come into existence through serendipity or happenstance. He specifically planned the language in a certain way. The two issues I am going to talk about are gender specificity, and the letters j and ŭ.

Gender Specificity in Esperanto

The Specificity Problem

I have been thinking about this for while, and have even resolved myself to learn the standard way and then learn the way that is more internally consistent with the language (by adding a male and female suffix and have the root be gender neutral, but definitely pointing to the a male base), but this seeming exception to the language’s definite design kept bothering me.

I kept thinking about what little I know of the Spanish, French, and Russian languages all of which have gender assignments for all nouns. Some of which are seemingly arbitrary to my American Male perspective, and completely counter to what is intuitive.

  • In Russian car, “maschina” (Englicized from Russian), is female and one would expect it to be male.
  • I will have to find more examples

These sorts of exceptions are rife throughout all languages that implement this construct, and it is one of the things that makes these languages difficult to learn and an exercise in memorizing exceptions.

Gender Specificity as Gateway Construct

Now, I was thinking that Esperanto’s gender specificity cannot be so out of place and that there has to be a very definite reason for it. Perhaps its existence which seems counter to its ease of use and internal consistency, and perhaps, it is not meant to cater to ease of use. Perhaps its primary existence is to facilitate Esperanto’s requirement to be a Gateway Language

As I have earlier pointed out other languages have gender assignment to nouns (perhaps even to other words too), and they have rules that deal with changing the word depending on its gender and current use. My thinking is that gender specificity in Esperanto is act as a gateway to this use in national languages. It is there to prepare a person for learning other languages that implement gender specificity, first, and then it maintains Esperanto’s internal consistency.

So, yes it does seem out of place and there is a better and more internally consistent way to implement gender specificity in Esperanto as most will agree, but to do so would be to remove a tool that acts as an important gateway to other languages.

Letters of Exception as a Gateway

A similar line of reasoning will follow here as well for the the letters j and ŭ, both of which sully Esperanto’s ability to call itself a completely phonetic and exception free language. Languages all across the world have letters that when used together form different sounds. I think it is said that Icelandic is the only truly phonetic alphabet used in the world.

Now, these two letters maintain a sort of consistency in their pronunciation when used. The letter j when used following specific vowels always the same sound, and ŭ has a similar use. Now, I currently believe that these exist for the specific use as a gateway to all other non-phonetic languages and to prepare the person for constructs that they might not otherwise have been exposed to in their native languages.

In Closing

I hope that some of what I have written makes sense to you and may shed some light on to why these exceptions may exist in the language. Please post and questions, comments, and suggestions.

Esperanto on Change.org did not make the Final Top 10 =(

In the second round of voting on Introduce Esperanto as a Foreign Language Subject in Schools received about 3600 votes and over 19 pages of comments. Esperanto did not make it into the top 10 that will be championed by Change.org’s people, but we did make in the top 25 ideas of honorable mentions. We had a great run. =)

Esperanto: Round 2 on Change.org

Ok, so on ‘Teaching Esperanto in our Schools’ on Change.org made it through to round 2 not by much. We need everyone to go out and cast your vote again, as well as spread the word to everyone that you already have done so, so that they can vote again.

Go! Go! Go!
